Rabbits 02:00
If all of this is the world And all my world what I know How many times to come How many more to come? Close my eyes in the sun Close my eyes to the sun How many times to the charm? All of this is the sum of what I know
2.
Ginkgo 02:50
Harken back, sing to me Show me deep inside where your fire lives Show me how I could carry on Sometimes strong and sometimes not Outwardly, inwardly Do they match, or are you just Dreaming til they do? Everyday another one falls Everyday another one falls Everyday another one falls Like stars into the earth You’ve been here; you’ve seen it all Why does the fire burn inside of anyone? In what do they believe? In a dream came clarity Sharper than grief, faster than inhibition Maybe one day you’ll find me there Living on my own Show me now what you feel Don’t hold back, save your apologies Make it real And look me in the eye Give me something real Give me something right at the center of what you are When all else falls away
3.
Peregrine 03:14
When you move it moves me too Something new is coming I see ya, I see ya, I see ya Moving through my life like a dove Even when you fall away I find a way to find again my anchor in the sea up above I see ya, I see ya, I see ya then everything I know comes undone, but the hours are gold and flow into their own kind of clarity soon enough Falling, you move Then I move too; I see the glory in that highest calling, that you live by And you’re like a dove over me like a dove over me like a dove over me like a dove over me
4.
The Rain 02:56
Now the rain has come again I’d forgotten of it since Now the rain is pouring in Can’t escape, it’s everything How did you get in here? How did you get in here? Everything you’ve done today Comes to you another day
5.
Anywhere 03:44
Love in the time of looking in, give me eye to eye, affirm my life Where does your mind go when you feed it Patience and clean air? Giving up too much and giving too little Get me in my own way Tell me what it’s to get it right Where does that leave me? Take me anywhere Take me anywhere I can’t remember what we were like before today I think we could change There’s a one in a thousand chance it goes right everything comes aligned Only have to get it once right everything comes aligned Take me anywhere Take me anywhere I can’t remember what we were like before today I think we could change Take me anywhere Take me anywhere I can’t remember what we were like before today

Provenance 04:49
Pattern moon, flower crater Stroke of luck upon the hour Every year, layered higher Patience building ground Down below, from above Down below, from above Boiled water, melted sugar Learning how to be the daughter Taking after, take from mother All that grows in gardens Start below, then above Sharing food, out of love Carry all that comes to me, on Solid ground so easily Circle back here Clearer with every year Animals, golden fables Pose the truth when I’m unable Understandings that we share Bring us ever closer So to you I will come So to you I will come Sour fruit, kitchen table Wish me well if you are able Call me by any name I will still respond So to you I will come So to you I become A blossom on our living tree Taller than I’ll ever see Never speak of Implicit love
7.
Ash 03:17
I took a walk through the woods because things change more quickly than I can take but here it is all the same Fear is not part of the rain or the snow or the ashes Within me lies the change It was later than I expected When I looked up, I saw the gold in the blue and the rain in the sky Only motion can break stillness The way that cold and heat combine Is the heart of this life And the way that it dies We savor the fruit of your dying
8.
Suspension 04:58
Four in the morning, I don’t recognize There’s a heartbeat, and there’s breathing In the hallway, in the fabric of the curtain Letting streetlight in Suspended here in time At your mercy, on the brink of your time The way the wind blows, magnified You don’t trust me, I’m not your choice Am I a threat or something worse? What is heavy, what is light? Now I lose the strength to hide You saw me all and felt the burden of our game Suspended in time What is heavy, what is light? Repeating movements all the time Or only once and never striking here again Suspended from life?
9.
Meteor 03:28
It came into view, and left us again I feel the wind rush over me in the memory of a meteor only a dream, only a dream that fades from view the color and the sound slips from my memory as close as it got, now it’s gone It comes into view so gracefully don’t know when it’ll leave me but if I ever should walk alone remind me, remind me of this way of being where I never stop to wonder how this all will end Trust in me, I think that this could go So far, so far from where we’d begun It came into view and left us again I feel the weight fall over me in the memory of a silhouette twice removed from anything I could hold to a light ‘cause the the shadow of a shadow isn’t anything to talk about when all the world is breathing and illuminates like a meteor if you trust it with your life illuminates like a meteor if you trust it with your life if I ever should walk alone if I ever should walk alone remind me, remind me of this way of being where I never stop to wonder how this all will end how this all will end

Alchemist 04:37
I’m here again, conversational Friend, we use each other like we’re starving At the end of my means, north-running pulling all of it with me I’m here again Finding I again am lacking The right shape or size of understanding How to give a name to things that never were named for me The moment turns into a stone A reason to live, or time to let go And later warmed inside a hand Life into jewels, remember me by my most I’m here again, finding I again am lacking What you want from me Will trying again be the charm? Or is it two by two, one by one, nothing there where we’d begun One by one, nothing more, take me down, take me back To when we performed for each other, back to None by one is nothing more, take me down, take me back Adamant in scarlet red and luster cool Fear it always takes the form you never want it to Emotional feature, symbolic creature Takes the form of anything you take a liking to But out there in the dark Hear the sound of someone calling to you, calling to you, your new timeline, home to life

Yellow House 04:17
A yellow house with a wooden porch An empty book, unlined, undrawn It’s so far from where I dream from So many streets we have to cross Looks like the promise you raised me on Work and wait, and peace will come Oh, what a wonderful dream that is But whether we live it depends On whether we turn away from other dreams And cut away a branch to let another grow Some with pain and some with sorrow But when I look back on my years I only see from here that the water overflows So let me not forget to share my luck If I should ever see your pain Let it be on me to not turn away but use my luck So that you can have lighthearted joy And know that you can depend on the dreams That should be promised to you and promised to me Just the same

Daylight 03:32
Don’t prove my worth with my smile or the rose on the edge of my face or the way I carry me and all of the daylight, night time warm me up, just another hour at the fire we were watching long ago in winter hear me out before I go you’re the only one I ever thought I could grow towards without losing out on light; on daylight, night time warm me up, I will keep these hours like a gift I’d always wanted to receive I don’t want to believe that we’ll never cross paths again, but I don’t want to live this life only throwing away all of this daylight, night time daylight, night time I’ll stop runnin’, I’ll stop runnin’, I’ll stop runnin’ away from my I’ll stop runnin’, I’ll stop runnin’, I’ll stop runnin’ away from my Fear, conviction, heritage, fascination Longing and fulfillment Weakness and resilience are my life I’ll take back what was always my life I’ll stop runnin’, I’ll stop runnin’, I’ll stop runnin’ away from my I’ll stop runnin’, I’ll stop runnin’, I’ll stop runnin’ away from my Fear, conviction, heritage, fascination Longing and fulfillment weakness and resilience are my life

Gold 06:21
“Michelle, I listened to your song. I feel like what you’re singing doesn’t quite make sense.” Gold, gold, everywhere you go Gold, gold, everywhere you go You look like you have just come from the moon Did they know where the beginning would start? Did they know where the beginning would start? Could I imagine, could I ever Could I imagine, could I ever All that I take with me Shows me what I should become And what I learn is what appears In everything I bring back here “Hi Michelle. Nothing in particular, wanted to ask you how you are. Yeah, we kind of worry about you, okay? Take care of yourself. Where are you going to be today? Maybe we go to San Francisco, but I don’t know where you’re going to be at certain time of the day or something. Anyways, nothing special. Just wish you everything safe, happy, and make sure to take care of yourself. And those are the important things. And well whenever you have time you can always call my cell phone. Thanks, bye.” At the edge everything is gold The sea between the world you had and for that the one I know Could I ever tell the story right? “All for a simple life…” “Patience, time, and love Show me what I should become What I learn is what appears In everything I bring back here Is that what you meant?” Could I ever tell the story right? Salt, heat, and light A simple life

about

Circling a theme of superstition and good luck charms, the songs are about everything from ancient trees to family cake recipes to the new Californian fire season.

The title is a nod to the fact that the meaning we find in so many objects and omens comes from associations we assign to them in ultimately arbitrary ways. But we can at once recognize that arbitrariness and still let them make our lives appear less chaotic and more meaningful. My life is a mosaic of all of these colorful symbols coexisting together – they let me tell a story about where I’ve been and where I think I’m going.

The thirteen songs on the album were written, recorded, and produced between February 2020 and the summer of 2021, between San Francisco and Santa Cruz, from my bedroom and remotely from the homes and studios of nearly a dozen collaborators during the pandemic.
